In 500 BC, the states of Qi and Lu held a ceremony for entering into an alliance at Jiagu, the border of the two states. Qi conspired to take the opportunity to kidnap the Duke Ding, ruler of Lu, forcing him to sign an agreement beneficial to Qi. ln charge of the propriety of the ceremony, Confucius deployed troops for defense in advance and resourcefully thwarted Qi's conspiracy. Duke Jing of Qi not only made an apology, but also returned to Lu the three castles that Oi had captured.
