Guqin (古琴), a 7-string zither with 3,000 years of history, is more than an instrument - it’s a philosophical companion. Confucius played it, Taoist sages meditated with it, and today, UNESCO recognizes it as a Masterpiece of Intangible Heritage.

History & Symbolism

Origins: Legend says the mythical emperor Fuxi created the guqin to "communicate with heaven."

Design: The curved top represents the sky; the flat base, the earth. The 13 inlaid dots mark lunar months.

Cultural Weight: Scholars played it to cultivate "qing" (emotion) and "jing" (serenity).

Iconic Pieces

"Flowing Water" (流水): A musical painting of nature, sent into space on the Voyager Golden Record.

"Wild Geese Descending on Sandbank" (平沙落雁): Evokes solitude and freedom.

"Three Variations on Plum Blossoms" (梅花三弄): Celebrates resilience in winter.

Modern Resonance

Film: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’s soundtrack revived global interest.

Technology: The Smart Guqin app teaches fingering via holograms.

Fusion: Jazz musician Wu Tong blends guqin with improvisation.
