Er-renzhuan is a distinctive form of performance art from northeastern China. The name translates to "two people spinning", but it actually features a man and a woman performing together on stage. The singing employs the high-pitched tones typical of traditional opera, yet the lyrics are humorous and accessible. The actors engage in walking, singing, dancing and storytelling while holding large handkerchiefs and fans specifically designed for the performance.

With a history spanning over 300 years, Er-renzhuan blends various folkloric performance styles. Its hallmark traits are a pure, simple sensibility combined with wild humor. In contrast to other forms of Chinese opera, Er-renzhuan is straightforward to stage and can be performed in a wide range of settings. From an artistic perspective, it serves a direct purpose: catharsis. In Northeast China, where people are passionate and expressive, Er-renzhuan provides an outlet for fun and emotional release.

The stories presented are often anecdotes, covering themes like marriage and love, historical tales, and myths and legends. While these subjects may be familiar, the exaggerated and energetic style of Er-renzhuan, along with its humorous and straightforward lyrics, allows audiences to intuitively grasp the play's themes, setting it apart from more traditional Chinese operas.

Er-renzhuan also plays a role in social education, with many traditional performances reflecting social values and encouraging good behavior. This aspect contributes to its artistic significance. Historically, Er-renzhuan has been closely associated with northeastern culture. However, some critics view this performance style as vulgar due to its lyrical and dance elements.

In recent years, artists have sought to enhance traditional Er-renzhuan by removing content that conflicts with contemporary social values and emphasizing its educational and informative functions. This evolution allows the traditional art form to thrive while maintaining its entertaining qualities.
