Hebei farmer carves fragile works of art on eggshells

Photo taken on shows Folk artist Long Changqing holding two egg carvings.

Whenever he has time, a farmer in Beiwu village in Guangping county of Handan, Hebei province, immerses himself in the art of egg-carving, a traditional folk art that involves engraving and painting. Long Changqing can carve various delicate designs on the shells of ostrich eggs, including figures, animals, and scenery. As he integrates traditional Chinese cultural elements into the carvings, his works are in demand at home and abroad. Egg carving originated with the custom of giving carved or colored eggs as gifts at weddings and birthday celebrations in ancient times.
