This magnificent hanging scroll is by Ren Yi (styled Boyan), a master of the late Qing Shanghai School. Living in 19th-century Shanghai, Ren was an innovative artist who blended traditional techniques with popular aesthetics to create a bold and vivid personal style. He was one of the Four Rens of Shanghai. This Fisherman scroll breaks conventions of the genre, portraying an extraordinary figure.

The painting uses a diagonal composition, with cliffs extending sideways to create strong dynamic movement. The fisherman depicted is not an ordinary laborer bending over his work; instead, he is a towering figure leaning against rocks, head held high, gazing into the distance. His deep gaze seems fixed on the horizon rather than on fish in the water. Ren’s brushwork is free and unrestrained, with rich, flowing ink that vividly captures the character’s transcendent spirit. This is not merely a portrait of a fisherman but an expression of "ambition beyond fishing." In Chinese culture, the fisherman often symbolizes a recluse scholar. This painting represents the literati ideal of maintaining lofty aspirations even while living in a worldly realm, showcasing the unique appeal of Shanghai School art that bridges the elegant and the popular.
