Lan Ying was a giant of the late Ming art world, regarded as the founder of the Wulin School. Although not born a literati, his paintings were deeply cherished by scholars. This Seeking Verses in the Autumn Forest demonstrates his superb coloring skills and unique interpretation of autumn scenery. The painting depicts a late autumn scene with mountains covered in red leaves and swirling mists, featuring colors that are bright but not gaudy.

In the composition, a scholar strolls through the autumn forest, seemingly seeking inspiration to compose poetry, which is the theme of seeking verses. Lan’s brushwork is sparse yet lush; the layers of red leaves particularly evoke a strong sense of autumn. His style is mellow and substantial, combining the strength of Northern school landscapes with the gentleness of the Southern style. The painting possesses a noble tone, expressing the literati’s keen perception of natural beauty and their tradition of seeking spiritual comfort in landscapes through its vibrant autumn colors and the verse-seeking figure. In Chinese culture, autumn is often associated with contemplation and creation; this painting perfectly captures the tranquility and beauty of seeking poetic moments amidst brilliant nature.
