The Greenish-White Jade Flower Pendant in the Capital Museum is a masterful example of Jin Dynasty (1115-1234 AD) jade carving. Crafted from greenish-white jade, this flat oval pendant combines techniques like relief, openwork, and incised line carving to depict two intertwined eight-petaled flowers on a branch.

Its most striking feature is the extensive use of openwork carving. This hallmark Jin Dynasty technique creates patterns by carving directly through the jade. Yet its appeal lies beyond the ethereal play of light and shadow. The artisan’s mastery of form and detail also gives it a vibrant vitality. The petals are full and slightly concave, unfolding gracefully; the leaf veins are outlined with simple, fluid incised lines. The back uses only minimal strokes to depict the stems, demonstrating a confident “less is more” approach.
