Carved Red Lacquer Square Pot with Cypress Bonsai

This piece is a complex miniature landscape that combines multiple artistic techniques, featuring a cypress bonsai set within a square Tihong (carved red lacquer) pot.
Tihong is an incredibly labor-intensive lacquerware technique. Artisans apply dozens, sometimes hundreds, of layers of red lacquer onto a base. Once the layers reach a sufficient thickness, they are meticulously carved away to create intricate relief designs. The pot here is decorated with scenes of an old man, a child, and a pine tree, symbolizing longevity and family joy. The cypress tree is equally exquisite; its leaves are crafted from wrapped green silk, its fruits are represented by yellow pom-poms, and the moss on the trunk is rendered with astonishing realism. In Chinese culture, the cypress symbolizes endurance and eternity. Brimming with vitality, this artwork is a prime example of Qing Dynasty decorative arts.
