Beijing-style architecture follows the principle of central axis symmetry and often uses courtyard layouts. Buildings of different ranks must follow strict rules regarding size, decoration details and so on.

The quadrangle courtyard is a traditional type of residence in Beijing. Its basic layout is symmetrical along the north-south axis. The entrance usually leading to a screen wall, blocking the view from outside. The main house in the center is for elders, while side rooms are for younger family members. This formal and orderly layout reflects the traditional values and strict family hierarchy common in northern China.

Royal palace architecture is another important part. It uses the central axis to create a grand and orderly space. Take the Forbidden City as an example: buildings are arranged in layers along the central axis, the palaces symmetrically placed, showing the strict structure of imperial rule. The red walls stand for dignity and authority, the yellow glazed roof tiles symbolize wealth and power, and the detailed murals and carvings highlight royal magnificence and majesty.
