Su-style architecture, common in Jiangsu and Zhejiang, blends the best features of both northern and southern styles. One of its most striking features is its garden-like layout.

Suzhou residences usually face south—shielding from cold winds and catching the sun in winter, while welcoming breezes in summer. Traditional Chinese courtyards often follow a central-axis symmetry, with buildings and landscapes on both sides mirroring each other, giving the space a sense of dignity and order. In the gardens, winding paths lead to quiet spots, with ponds, rockeries, and spaces for keeping birds and fish. Roofs are often gently sloped with smooth lines, covered in grey tiles. At the four corners, upturned eaves add a light and graceful touch.

The courtyards are decorated with various artistic elements, among which wood carvings and stone carvings are most notable. Wood carvings, often seen on doors, windows, and beams, usually depict flowers, birds, and animals. Stone carvings, found on steps or columns, show fine craftsmanship and come in many forms. Pine, bamboo, and plum trees are commonly planted, not only to beautify the courtyard but also to convey good wishes.
