Masters of Calligraphy: Emperor Qianlong
Emperor Qianlong, the longest-lived emperor in Chinese history, presided over the zenith of the Qing Dynasty. Beyond his monumental political achievements and cultural expansions, he was a devoted calligrapher proficient in multiple scripts, with a particular fondness for semi-cursive and cursive styles.
Deeply admiring the Yuan Dynasty master Zhao Mengfu, Qianlong dedicated immense effort to copying classic masterpieces. His mature calligraphy features slightly elongated characters with rounded, even, and gracefully smooth brushstrokes. While some critics note his style leans toward uniformity with less variation, it undeniably possesses a majestic, flowing elegance. Like gliding clouds and flowing water, his extensive royal writings perfectly reflect the poised and grand demeanor of a prolific sovereign.
