Yaozhou Kiln Ceramic Firing Technique
Yaozhou Kiln originated in Tang Dynasty and peaked in Song Dynasty as the representative of northern celadon and the largest among the Six Major Kiln Systems. Its main kiln sites were located along the Qi River in Tongchuan, known historically as the "Ten-Mile Pottery Workshops".
After dynastic changes, only Chenlu Town continues the tradition. Preserving complete traditional techniques, nearly every household makes ceramics, creating the unique "Chenlu Never Nights" scene. In the 1970s, experts helped revive six major ceramic types including celadon and black-glazed wares.
The traditional process involves seven key aspects and 17 steps: from material preparation and hand-throwing, to carving decoration and glaze mixing, ending with kiln loading and firing. Each step requires specialized craftsmen.
Currently, this millennia-old technique faces extinction. Modernization has caused decline, with young artisans leaving, making urgent preservation necessary.
