Cizhou Kiln Firing Technique
The Cizhou Kiln originated in the Neolithic Age, flourished in the Song Dynasty and peaked in the Ming Dynasty. Centered in Pengcheng Town, Handan, it became a renowned northern porcelain capital with a history spanning millennia.
Using local materials like blue clay and white alkali, Cizhou Kiln developed unique formulas and processing techniques to create colorful ceramics. Its diverse shaping techniques, such as sculpture and hand-throwing, coupled with outstanding decorations, formed three major series including white-slip porcelain and black-glazed ware.
Centered on firing techniques, Cizhou Kiln cultivated rich ceramic culture including commerce customs and folk literature. Pengcheng's annual temple fairs fostered prosperous trade and cultural heritage.
Now facing challenges like lack of successors and funding, this ancient craft urgently needs systematic preservation to continue its millennia-old tradition.
