The Bai tie-dyeing technique in Zigong, Sichuan, originated during the Qin and Han dynasties. Known as "jiaoxie" in the Tang Dynasty, it became widespread in the Ba-Shu region. Initially usingpure cotton, it now uses various natural materials including linen, silk, satin, and leather.

Based on ancient methods, Zigong tie-dyeing has developed dozens of techniques like twisting, stitching, tying, and binding, forming a unique craft. Dyeing has evolved from single-dip to multi-color processes, creating vibrant, durable patterns that radiate from the center with distinct artistic effects. Using needles like brushes, it subtly reveals geometric, figurative, animal, floral, and calligraphic designs, showcasing strong local character.

With the rise of mechanical textile printing, handmade tie-dyeing has been greatly impacted. Zigong tie-dyeing has declining practice, fewer artisans, and stalled production, now endangered and urgently needing preservation.
