Rose Quartz Incense Burner with Coiling Chi-Dragons

This incense burner from the Qianlong period is affectionately known as the Little Pink Burner due to its unique rosy hue and smooth texture. It is carved from a single, solid piece of rose quartz (furong stone). Given the crystal's brittle nature, sourcing a raw block large and flawless enough for such a carving was an exceptional challenge.
While its shape echoes the heavy, ceremonial bronze vessels of ancient China, the surface tells a different story. It is decorated with Chi-dragons—mythical, hornless guardians that coil symmetrically around the body. However, the object’s most captivating quality is its unexpected softness. Despite being an imperial object associated with a powerful male ruler, the rose quartz lends the piece a gentle, almost feminine grace. This unique aesthetic preference perfectly reflects the pursuit of the Qianlong court: beyond solemnity, it embraced the natural beauty of materials and the expression of individuality.
