Crazy Stone — A Masterpiece of Multi-Threaded Storytelling

Crazy Stone is a comedy directed by Ning Hao and starring Huang Bo, Xu Zheng, and others. It was a co-production between mainland China and Hong Kong and was released in mainland China on June 30, 2006, followed by its Hong Kong release on August 10 that year.

The film tells the story of a struggling handicraft factory in Chongqing that discovers a valuable piece of jadeite while demolishing its old premises. An international thief named Mike and a local three-man gang both set their sights on the jadeite, triggering a series of schemes, confrontations, and battles of wits.

With its vivid portrayal of everyday urban life and extensive use of local Chongqing dialect and slang, Crazy Stone is steeped in a distinctly local atmosphere. Its strong grassroots character resonated with audiences and made the film a successful example of low-budget filmmaking. 

The film employs a multi-threaded narrative structure, interweaving different storylines into a complex and tightly connected web. The main plot centers on the theft and protection of the “stone,” while multiple subplots unfold alongside it. Coincidences and unexpected twists keep the story moving at a brisk pace, enhancing both its suspense and entertainment value while creating a strong comic effect. 

In 2006, Crazy Stone won the Best Original Screenplay Award at the 43rd Golden Horse Awards. As of September 11, 2025, the film had grossed 25.34 million yuan at the mainland China box office.
