Yanshan Liansi Paper Making Technique

Liansi paper, produced in Yanshan County, Jiangxi Province, is one of China's finest handmade bamboo papers, celebrated as paper that lasts a thousand years. Its craft originated in the Song Dynasty and flourished during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

The raw material is young bamboo harvested around the Beginning of Summer—before the bamboo leaves fully emerge, when the fibers are at their finest. The process involves 72 distinct steps and takes a full year to complete, including months of natural bleaching through sun and rain. As the saying goes, "A single sheet is not easily won—it takes seventy-two hand movements." There are no chemical indicators; everything relies on the artisan's experience, with strict demands on water quality and herbal additives.

The finished paper is brilliant white, smooth and resilient. It resists insects and heat, never fading over time. In ancient China, it was the preferred choice for rare books, calligraphy, paintings and fans. Many treasured works survive today only because they were written or printed on Liansi paper. Due to its complexity and the difficulty of transmitting the craft, this technique remains extremely precious and cannot be replaced by modern machinery.
