June 5, 2025 – Archaeologists in northeast China's Liaoning Province have identified 44 newly discovered sites linked to the Hongshan Culture (circa 4700–2900 BCE) during a recent survey, shedding further light on the evolution of this prehistoric civilization.

The discovery was made in the Daling River midstream basin around Chaoyang City as part of the "Archaeological China" major project - Research on the Social Civilization Process of the Hongshan Culture. Conducted by the Liaoning Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology alongside local institutions, the survey covered 1,500 square kilometers across river valleys, including tributaries such as Gudong, Liangshui, and Mangniu rivers.
Yu Huaishi, a researcher at the institute, stated that the team documented 570 archaeological sites, with 374 being newly recorded, including the 44 Hongshan Culture additions. These findings will help map the distribution patterns and settlement characteristics of Hongshan communities in the region.
Next Steps: Researchers will analyze the spatial organization and developmental shifts of these settlements to deepen understanding of Hongshan societal complexity.
