Xie Lingyun and the Rise of Landscape Poetry

Xie Lingyun (385–433), a native of what is now Henan Province, came from one of the most prominent aristocratic families of his time. Exceptionally gifted, he was also known for his proud and aloof character. However, he never won the trust of the highest rulers of his day. Instead, he suffered repeated setbacks for failing to observe established rules and conventions, and was eventually executed on charges of plotting rebellion. 

Xie Lingyun served as an official in places blessed with beautiful mountains and rivers. He often turned to nature to express his frustration and loneliness, traveling extensively and recording his experiences in poetry. 

Before Xie Lingyun, poets generally depicted scenery as a series of static images, with little sense of changes in time or space. By contrast, Xie Lingyun's landscape poems often recount an entire journey, as indicated by titles such as A Journey to Red Stone and Sailing on the Sea and Crossing the Ridge from Jinzhu Stream and Walking Along the Creek. In these poems, the natural scenery changes as the poet's gaze shifts and time passes, giving them the characteristics of travel writing. Through close observation, Xie Lingyun captured the distinctive features of different landscapes while filling each poem with a rich and varied array of images. 

From the perspective of literary history, the emergence of landscape poetry was a lengthy process. Since the Jian'an period in the late Han dynasty, descriptions of scenery had gradually become more prominent in poetry. During the Western and Eastern Jin dynasties, a number of poems describing journeys and excursions also appeared, and could already be regarded as early forms of landscape poetry. Before Xie Lingyun, however, such works appeared only sporadically, and poets' emotional engagement with nature remained relatively limited, making them less likely to leave a profound impression. 

It was therefore Xie Lingyun who, with his exceptional poetic talent and an artistic style that appealed to the tastes of his time, ushered in a flourishing of landscape poetry.
