Court Ladies Scroll (Ming Dynasty)

Du Jin's "Court Ladies Scroll" brings the leisurely life of Tang Dynasty palace women vividly to life. This long handscroll, a creative reinterpretation of a Song Dynasty copy, serves as a perfect window into the world of ancient aristocratic women. Like a cinematic long take, the scroll unfolds to show ladies engaged in various activities within a courtyard: playing Cuju (ancient football) and Chuiwan (a golf-like game), playing with children, applying makeup, and making music. Rockeries, bamboo groves, and banana plants cleverly divide the space, creating an atmosphere that is both private and elegant. Using meticulous brushwork, Du Jin employed fluid lines and bright colors to depict over a hundred women, each with a unique expression. Their makeup and attire are typical of the Ming Dynasty style. This painting is not only a visual feast but also a precious historical record, allowing us a glimpse into the splendor and vitality of palace life a thousand years ago.
