Dong Bangda (1699–1769) was not only a high-ranking official but also a respected painter. His style was ancient, vigorous, and refined. This work, from 1759, is titled In the Manner of Wang Meng, but it is more than a simple copy.

Wang Meng of the Yuan dynasty was famous for dense, complex compositions. Here, Dong borrows that spirit, but he also mixes in techniques from Dong Yuan and Huang Gongwang. The result is a painting that feels both ancient and fresh.

The composition is well-balanced. Mountains open and close like a fan. Paths and streams lead your eye deep into the landscape. Dong’s brushwork is steady and proper — no sharp, jumping lines. His ink is light and clear, never harsh or aggressive. Even the colors are soft and harmonious.

Dong Bangda represents a gentler side of Qing painting. He does not shock or surprise. Instead, he invites you to enter a world of order, learning, and quiet beauty. This painting is like a classical poem: every part is in its right place, and the whole is greater than the sum.
