Crossing a Snowy Bridge on a Donkey

Wen Zhengming (1470–1559) was a giant of the Wu School — a master of poetry, calligraphy, and painting. He especially loved painting snow scenes. Crossing a Snowy Bridge on a Donkey is one of his finest.

The scene is winter. Mountains are bare, trees are leafless. A traveler in a hood rides a donkey across a bridge. The world is silent, cold, and white. But look closely: the white is not painted with white pigment. Wen Zhengming used no white powder at all. Instead, he brushed light ink around the areas he wanted to keep white. The snow is “empty” — suggested, not drawn.

The mountains and rocks are painted with bold, rough brushstrokes, showing the influence of Huang Gongwang. The sky and water are washed with pale ink, creating a freezing atmosphere. You can almost feel the cold air.

For Wen Zhengming, winter was not depressing. It was a time of purity and quiet strength. This painting invites you to slow down, feel the chill, and appreciate the beauty of simplicity.
