Ren – The Heart of Confucian Thought

Ren is the core of Confucianism and the most important idea in Confucius's teaching. Confucius regarded ren as the highest moral ideal and standard. It represents the noblest quality a person can have. According to statistics, the character ren (仁) appears 109 times in The Analects — much more than in any earlier text. This shows just how much Confucius valued it.

Confucius said that Ren is rooted in the idea of being human. It comes from the relationships between people. Its basic meaning is to care for others. This was a very advanced idea at the time, because in a slave society, slaves were treated only as tools that could talk — they were not seen as real people.

As the highest virtue, ren includes many qualities, such as respect, generosity, honesty, diligence and kindness. The most important part of ren is this: you should help others succeed as you seek your own success; you should help others do well as you seek your own well-being; and you should never force on others what you don't like yourself. This is the highest standard of ren. This kind of caring, human-centred thinking is one of the most valuable parts of Confucius's teachings

Confucius believed that ren is essential to human life. If a person loses ren, everything they have gained will also be lost. A person must hold on to ren at all times — never leaving it even for a moment, never abandoning it even when in a hurry or when living in hardship. What Confucius taught about ren has become a lasting virtue passed down through generations in China.
