The character xiao depicts an elder supported by a child, originally meaning ‘to serve one’s parents with devotion.’ Its association with ancestral sacrifice developed later as part of broader ritual practice. In ancient China, filial piety was regarded as one of the most important ethical principles.

Confucius taught that filial piety requires treating one's parents in accordance with ritual propriety (li). While parents are alive, they should be served according to the proper rites; after they pass away, they should be buried and honored with sacrifices in accordance with the same ritual standards.

At the same time, Confucius emphasized that filial piety is not merely about providing material support. One must also harbor genuine love and respect for one's parents in the heart. Filial piety, in essence, represents sincere feelings and deep reverence toward one's parents.

Confucius also pointed out that a good attitude shown only occasionally does not count as true filial piety. Only when such an attitude is maintained consistently can it be considered the practice of filial piety. In serving one's parents, the most difficult thing is to always keep a pleasant and respectful expression on one's face. Doing so for a moment is not hard, but sustaining it at all times is no easy task.

Confucius further taught that filial piety also means that children should be careful with their words and actions so as not to cause their parents’ unnecessary worry. The only exception is when the child falls ill—since medical care was not advanced in ancient times, illness was considered an unavoidable matter.

Confucius also discussed the relationship between filial piety and governance. He believed that a person who is filial to parents and maintains harmonious relations with siblings, even without holding any official position, can still help improve social morals through their personal conduct. Therefore, those in office should lead by example and practice filial piety themselves.

Rather than giving abstract definitions of filial piety, Confucius offered detailed and comprehensive discussions on how to put this virtue into practice. Filial piety not only helps to harmonize families and stabilize society, but also promotes the positive development of society as a whole.
