Gilded Wood Ruyi Scepter with Peony Motif

This exquisite object is a Ruyi scepter, a celebrated symbol of good fortune in Chinese culture. The name Ruyi translates literally to "as you wish," representing the fulfillment of one's desires. Originating from the Qing Dynasty's imperial workshops, this masterpiece was carved from a single block of wood using high-relief techniques to mimic the organic form of a peony plant.
The sculpture features three fully bloomed peonies and two buds, connected by gracefully twisting branches. The petals are carved with remarkable intricacy, capturing the delicate layers of the flowers. Known as the King of Flowers in China, the peony is a traditional emblem of wealth, honor, and prosperity. The entire piece is finished in a lavish gold lacquer, enhancing its opulent appearance. It stands as a testament to the Qianlong era's aesthetic pursuit of luxury and technical perfection, serving as both a decorative object and a token of blessings.
