This is a hat stand—a piece of furniture specifically for holding official hats. Qing officials wore hats adorned with feather plumes that could not be crushed. The magic of this piece is that although it is porcelain, it looks exactly like carved red lacquer (cinnabar). This is a type of imitation porcelain.

The Craftsmanship

The stand is cinnabar red with gold-painted carvings. The top sphere (where the hat rests) features Eight Treasures motifs. Hidden on the stem are the Implied Eight Immortals—not the gods themselves, but their magical objects, such as Li Tieguai’s gourd or Lü Dongbin’s sword, symbolizing good fortune. The base is a stable four-lobed shape. The carvings were sculpted in the clay body before glazing, perfectly mimicking the layered depth of real carved lacquer.
