Solar Terms Wellness: the Beginning of Summer (Lixia)
As we enter the Beginning of Summer (Lixia) around May 5th or 6th, we bid farewell to spring and welcome the rising heat, thunderstorms, and the peak growing season for crops. Ancient emperors would travel to the suburbs to "welcome the summer" on this day. Folk customs include weighing oneself and drinking Lixia tea.
Health Tips
After Lixia, people often experience irritability, excess internal heat and poor appetite or sleep. A classic TCM method called Grasping the Five Meridians is highly recommended. This involves using the five fingers to simultaneously tap along the midline of the head (Du Meridian) and the Bladder and Gallbladder meridians on both sides. Doing this for 3–5 minutes regulates nervous function and revitalizes the spirit.
Dietary Choices
Even if you are healthy, be cautious of catching a cold as clothing becomes thinner. Avoid excessive sweating, which can strain the heart. The elderly should pay special attention to avoiding blood stasis to prevent heart attacks. The season calls for peace and joy; avoid sudden bursts of excitement. Dietary principles should focus on low fat, low salt, high vitamins, and light flavors. A small amount of green onions in the morning and a small glass of red wine in the evening can help circulate Qi and blood.
