Yan Zhenqing (709–785 CE) was an outstanding calligrapher and statesman of the Tang Dynasty. He is famous in Chinese history for creating the Yan style of regular script. Later generations honored him as one of the Four Great Masters of Regular Script.

His famous works in regular script include the Stele of Duobao Pagoda (Duobao Ta Bei), which is careful and well-balanced in style, and the Stele of Yan Qinli (Yan Qinli Bei), which shows the full maturity of the Yan style. Another important work from his later years, Record of Magu Immortal Altar (Magu Xiantan Ji), looks more simple, powerful, and grand.

The most striking features of the Yan style are strength, weight, and dignity. Its strokes look full and rich, but they also contain inner force. The structure is broad, square, and steady. The whole style feels grand and majestic. It is like an upright and noble man standing in a royal court. It perfectly reflects the powerful spirit of the great Tang Dynasty.

Yan Zhenqing’s life is a good example of the idea that “the writing is like the person.” During the An Lushan Rebellion, he bravely stood up and led local forces against the enemy. People admired his loyalty and courage. In the end, he was captured by the rebels at an old age. He refused to surrender and died with honor. The strong and noble spirit in his calligraphy was a true reflection of his character.
