Huzhou Brush Making Technique

Huzhou brushes are widely regarded as the finest Chinese calligraphy brushes, renowned for their superior materials and meticulous craftsmanship. Their birthplace is Shanlian Town in Zhejiang‘s Huzhou region, where brush-making dates back to the Jin Dynasty. According to the Huzhou Prefecture Gazetteer from the Qing era, the Sui Dynasty monk Zhiyong—a descendant of the legendary calligrapher Wang Xizhi—once lived in the area, attracting brush artisans who formed the foundation of the craft.

Through the Tang and Song dynasties, the technique matured significantly. By the Yuan Dynasty, Huzhou brushes had earned their reputation as the king of brushes, joining Hui ink, Duan inkstones and Xuan paper as the Four Treasures of the Study.

The process is entirely handmade, involving over 120 steps—material selection, water-basin work, binding, casing, trimming, engraving, and more—each handled by specialized craftspeople. Guided by the principles of precision, purity and beauty, they produce brushes with four essential qualities: sharpness, evenness, roundness, and resilience. The key lies in preserving the natural hair tips at the brush point, which gives Huzhou brushes their signature responsiveness and control.
