
Discovering Three Kingdoms Culture: Key Historical Sites in Sichuan
Chengdu Wuhouci Museum(成都武侯祠博物馆)
The Wuhouci Museum, established in 223 AD during the construction of Liu Bei's tomb, is the only temple in China where a ruler and his ministers are jointly worshipped. It serves as a significant memorial for Zhuge Liang, Liu Bei, and other Shu Han heroes. Recognized as one of China's first national first-class museums, it is revered as the "Sacred Land of the Three Kingdoms" and has over 1790 years of historical significance.
2. Baimaguan Pass(白马关)
Baimaguan is a key node in Sichuan's Three Kingdoms cultural tourism route, located 75 kilometers from Chengdu. This national 4A-level scenic area features historical sites such as the Temple of Pang Tong, and the 4.7-kilometer-long Jin Niu Road(金牛蜀道), one of the best-preserved ancient roads in Sichuan with over 2300 years of history. The area also integrates recreational activities like grass skiing, rock climbing, and zip-lining, making it a unique blend of culture and leisure.
3. Jianmenguan Pass(剑门关)
Known as the "Throat of Sichuan" and "Northern Shield of Shu," Jianmen Pass is the most iconic section of the ancient Shu Road, which spans rugged terrain and connects the southwest to central China. Praised by poet Li Bai in his masterpiece The Difficulty of Shu Roads, Jianmen Pass is a national 5A-level scenic area and a designated patriotic education base. Since becoming a national research and practice education base in 2018, it has attracted visitors from across China and abroad through diverse cultural and educational activities.
4. Wanjuan Tower(万卷楼)
Wanjuan Tower was the retreat and study site of Chen Shou, author of The Records of the Three Kingdoms. Established during the Shu Han period, it has undergone reconstruction during the Tang, Ming, and Qing dynasties. The tower’s grand architecture features a three-tiered wooden structure and houses three exhibition halls showcasing over 2,000 historical documents, 500 artifacts, and 10,000 books. It is a significant site for studying Three Kingdoms culture.
5. Hanhou Shrine (汉桓侯祠)
Located in Langzhong, Sichuan, also known as the Zhang Fei Temple, honors the renowned Shu Han general Zhang Fei. With a history spanning over 1700 years, the current structures date back to the Ming and Qing dynasties and include Zhang Fei’s tomb and numerous artifacts from the Three Kingdoms era. Recognized as a national key cultural relic protection site, the shrine is a vital destination for Three Kingdoms cultural exploration.
