Love, Chekhov!: Witty Takes on Love & Life from a Modern Lens

Love, Chekhov! is a lively, modern stage production by China National Drama Theatre, paying a fresh tribute to Anton Chekhov, one of the greatest playwrights in world theatre.

Created in 2020 to mark the 160th anniversary of Chekhov’s birth, the play premiered successfully in April 2021. It reinterprets classic works from a youthful, contemporary point of view.

The show is based on three of Chekhov’s witty one-act comedies: The Bear, The Proposal and The Wedding. It also blends in well-known characters and plots from his famous short stories including The Man in a Case.

Using a creative parallel narrative structure, the play brings characters from different works together into a unified “Chekhov literary universe”. Lighthearted and humorous, it explores the timeless theme of love and life, giving international audiences a charming new way to appreciate Chekhov’s stories.
