Dream of the Red Chamber: An Epic of Eastern Aesthetics

The award-winning original national dance drama Dream of the Red Chamber will be staged at the Shenzhen Binhai Art Center from April 1 to April 4.

Directed by Li Xing and Li Chao, the production reimagines the classic Chinese literary masterpiece through a modern, youthful lens. Centered on the tragic romance of Jia Baoyu, Lin Daiyu, and Xue Baochai, the performance draws visual inspiration from Ming and Qing dynasty paintings to recreate the aesthetic grandeur and poetic sorrow of the Grand View Garden.

The choreography unfolds in 12 distinct yet interconnected chapters—such as "Entering the Mansion," "Burying the Flowers," and "Reunion"—mirroring the traditional episodic structure of the original novel. Performed by a stellar cast of top young dancers from across the country, this 140-minute visual feast breathes contemporary vitality into a timeless national epic.
