Tao Yuanming — Pioneer of Pastoral Poetry

Tao Yuanming (c. 365–427) was born into a declining family of officials. His great-grandfather was a founding figure of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, but by his father’s generation, the family fortunes had faded. In his youth, Tao aspired to serve society, but he soon realized that he was unsuited to official life. At the age of 41, he withdrew to the countryside and remained there until the end of his life.

After leaving office and returning to rural life, Tao drew on his firsthand experience of farming and his reflections on life in his poetry, opening up a new genre in classical Chinese poetry. Pastoral poetry takes rural landscapes, village life, and farming as its principal themes. It transforms the everyday world of farming and rural life into a realm of poetic expression, becoming a distinctive tradition in both Chinese and world literature. 

The collection Drinking Wine consists of 20 poems in which Tao Yuanming expresses his reflections on history, reality, and life through the theme of wine. Together, they form a deeply introspective expression of his inner world. The fifth poem is the best known and is regarded as one of Tao’s representative works. It depicts the poet picking chrysanthemums by the eastern fence after working in the fields and gazing toward the mountains in the distance.

Written in simple, unadorned, natural, and flowing language, the poem is rich in philosophical insight and embodies Tao Yuanming’s distinctive poetic style. It brings together profound reflections on life with evocative imagery, achieving a harmonious fusion of emotion, scenery, and philosophy. The poem also makes effective use of symbolism. The chrysanthemum represents the poet’s noble and tranquil character and his ideal of maintaining his integrity apart from worldly concerns. In later generations, the chrysanthemum became closely associated with Tao Yuanming and came to symbolize his character.
