Hebei Bangzi Opera is a branch of bangzi (clapper) opera. It emerged after bangzi opera came from Shanxi and Shaanxi to Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei, merging with the local dialects, institution and aesthetics. One of the main genres of opera in Hebei Province, it grew popular across a wide area. The bangzi opera from Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces was called Qinqiang in Qing Dynasty literature. Hebei Bangzi Opera is also known as Beijing Bangzi Opera, Tianjin Bangzi Opera and Zhili Bangzi Opera (Zhili being the name of Hebei Province during the Qing Dynasty).
