New Bamboo

The new bamboo outgrows the old
Relying on the elder's selfless support.
Newcomers next year will rise still taller,
Hemming Phoenix Pool if joined together.
Zheng Xie (1693-1765), better known as Zheng Banqiao, was an artist from Jiangsu Province. He expressed himself through painting, noted for his rendering of orchid, bamboo, and rock. He was also a poet, and a calligrapher who created a new calligraphic style infuenced by his orchid paintings.
"Phoenix Pool" in the last line alludes to the imperial estate, being almost always vast.
